Circles: Collaborative Community-building in Education
Circles, formerly known as Tribes, is a collaborative, community-building approach used in classrooms to foster respect, inclusivity, and positive relationships among students. I have used these skills countless times in my homeroom, advisory and regular classes to great effect. This method is based on the belief that learning thrives in an environment of mutual trust and support.
Key principles of the Circles method include:
- Respect: Encouraging active listening and respectful dialogue, where each student’s opinion is valued.
- Community Building: Developing a sense of belonging and shared responsibility within the classroom.
- Personal Reflection: Offering opportunities for students to reflect on their own behaviors and actions within the group.
- Inclusive Participation: Ensuring that all students, regardless of background or ability, have an equal opportunity to contribute.
The Circles method is used in social-emotional learning (SEL) programs and has been shown to improve student engagement, reduce conflict, and build a supportive learning environment. It helps students develop stronger communication skills, empathy, and teamwork while promoting positive classroom dynamics.
