TOEFL Curriculum Reform

Led research-driven reforms that increased average TOEFL scores from 78 to 93 in two years

Key Achievement

As the TOEFL expert at Tianjin FLS, I spearheaded an action research project that transformed our English curriculum, resulting in a 19% increase in average TOEFL scores (78 to 93) while maintaining our focus on authentic language proficiency.

The Challenge

Our initial research revealed several critical issues:

  • Class grades showed little correlation with TOEFL scores for mid-performing students
  • Students were splitting focus between schoolwork and external TOEFL prep courses
  • Curriculum gaps existed in integrated tasks, writing variety, and cognitively demanding activities
  • Students didn't recognize connections between classroom activities and TOEFL skills

Research & Implementation

Initial Research Phase

Conducted correlation studies between GPA and TOEFL scores, identifying the "middle band" discrepancy. Led qualitative interviews revealing students' divided focus between school and external TOEFL prep.

December 2018 Report

Curriculum Alignment

Led vertical alignment of English curriculum from Year 1 to Year 3. Created detailed mapping of TOEFL skills/subskills and compared to our existing curriculum.

March 2019 Update

  • Expanded writing task variety to match TOEFL prompts

This research-based approach to curriculum reform contributed to my recognition as Dipont Education's "Teacher of the Year" at the 2018 annual conference.
